Before and After – My Desk Makeover

Reading Time: 5 minutes

This desk makeover was much needed! I purchased this apartment (my first property) back in August 2021 and I have been waiting to have the money to start renovating. However, I am realising that the big projects are going to take time to save for, there are little things I can do around my home to make it better.

Decorating my desk space and home office was probably the most important place to start; I work from home for my full time job and I am determined to get this blog off the ground so having an inspiring work environment is really important to me.

Declutter Your Desk

As always, I will preach, declutter your desk space before you start your desk makeover. There is a super handy guide on decluttering paperwork here to get you going. Go through everything in your drawers and desktop. There wasn’t much on my desk other than a load of unorganised wires as I had already done this step.

Desk Makeover on a Budget

The budget for this desk makeover was £60 as that is what I had spare this month! I am working with what I already had and what my imagination can design. The desk was a find from Facebook Market back in November. The shelves, I was saving for another project that will probably be another few months away anyway and I am too impatient. Most of the accessories I styled the space with, I already had.

How to make your own Neon Sign

Real bespoke neon signs cost a minimum of £400! There is no way I was waiting around to save for that. I purchased some foam core board, a glue gun and a couple of To make the sign, choose a font, print it out on a3 paper, tape it on the board and trace it onto the foam core board. It makes an indent onto the board quite easily. Use a retractable blade knife to cut around the letters. Finally, glue the

I realise she is a bit rugged but she saved me hundreds!

Painting the Desk

The wood colour of the desk really bothered me, just not my thing- Ronseal black paint with primer was used to paint the desk. As the desk is made of particleboard, it needed a light sanding and a wipe down so the paint would adhere to it. I used one coat and It came out amazingly and looks as though it was always meant to be black. I was very impressed, would totally recommend this paint.

Painting the Arch

When I told my partner I was going to be painting a pink arch on the wall as our first renovation project, he was less than impressed. He actually likes it now and I am obsessed! Watch this video first to see how it’s done. It is quite simple though! You will need a mini roller and string!

How to Style Your Desk Space

If like myself you do not have the budget to buy loads of new accessories for your desk makeover, use what you have. Look around your home for plants, candles, vases, frames, artwork and play around with the items. Lighting is also a key element to desk design, not just for aesthetics but for your health. You need to make sure your workspace is well lit but not too bright as to not strain your eyes. Use stationary and tech to style your space too. The only items purchased for this project was the vase and the mousepad. Next up will be a laptop stand, mouse and keyboard!

I can’t wait to show you my next project, whatever it will be! If you have any suggestions for a great desk set up or fun styling tips, let me know in the comments!
